September Happenings

The Planning Department is working hard, but we've also paused to mark the changing of the seasons and significant days in the month. In honor of the 20th anniversary of 9-11, Planning and Development Department Staff completed four round trips of 6 flights of stairs in our offices at 611 Walker. Each round trip was dedicated to the hijacked flights on 9-11: American Airlines Flight 11, which flew into the North Tower; United Airlines Flight 175, which hit the South World Trade Center Tower; American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, and Flight 93, which did not reach its Washington D.C. target, but crashed in Pennsylvania. We honored our first responders and military, the American lives lost, and the families who lost loved ones in the terrorist attacks.

On Sept. 17, PD participated in the PARK(ing) Day event where City Departments and partner agencies transformed street parking spots into creative spaces to rest, play and learn about new programs. The event gave a different view of how our city could look with fewer cars on the road. With cooler temperatures finally coming to town, Director Wallace Brown led the team on a picnic in front of City Hall. The Development Services team took advantage of the recently installed Houston BCycle station to bike and walk to Discovery Green.

In preparation for our annual employee giving campaign, the Combined Municipal Campaign, our staff visited the Houston Food Bank. During the month of October, PD will raise money for the Houston Food Bank and other charitable organizations.
